Choosing the Right Luggage

Fabric

Luggage manufacturers worldwide use a variety of fabrics. Some of these are nylon, polyester, vinyl, tapestry, ABS plastic and leather. The most recommended material is Cordura nylon and Ballistic nylon. This type of material stands up to rigorous treatment and is extremely strong. They are normally used in high-end luggage. Leather is strong but it is not recommended for large pieces of luggage because it will scratch and scar very easily. Another disadvantage is that leather stretches making it very difficult to repair.

ABS plastic or polypropylene is recommend when selecting hardside luggage. Main advantage of this kind of luggage is that it protects against stains and protects fragile items, but has a disadvantage with weight.

Zippers

The two most popular types of zippers used in today’s luggage are Coil Zippers and Molded Zippers. Coil zippers consist of a nylon or polyester strand wrapped and stitched onto a tape. This type is most commonly used.

Molded Zippers consist of a metal teeth, which are individually placed to the tape. This type of zipper is becoming rare.

The key is to look for oversized zippers; the larger the zip the stronger it will be.

Wheels

Beware of wheel systems where both the wheel and the feet are one unit. Look for large wheels that are inset into the suitcase. We recommend ballbearing wheels which allow for a smoother ride. Small wheels made out of plastic tend to heat up and melt; this in turn causes the case to be very unstable.

Pull Handle Assembly

This is the trolley cart system incorporated in modern day luggage. This allows for easier mobility. Beware of suitcases with the pull handle assembly mounted on the outside of the case, and made with round tubes. This design is poor and can be damaged very easily, disabling the entire unit. We recommend pull handle systems mounted internal; these are protected by the actual frame of the suitcase. Also ensure that the pull handle system extends to a height allowing the case to be comfortably pulled.
